Interview with a dermatologist

Margareta Frohm Nilsson

We delve into skin care for babies & children and have interviewed dermatologist Margareta Frohm Nilsson ( Med. Dr. specialist in Dermatology) at Hudläkargruppen.

How is the skin structured?
It is built up in different layers. The topmost layer is called the epidermis (upper skin) and consists of cells called keratinocytes, at the very end we have a horny layer which is a protective layer. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis (the skin), which consists of collagen fibers, sweat glands, hair follicles, elastic fibers and blood vessels. At the very bottom we have the fat layer which protects against impacts and is heat insulating.

How does baby & children's skin differ from adult skin?
After all, children's skin is thinner and more fragile, and thus also more sensitive than an adult's skin, which is more robust and more durable. Therefore, it is important to take into account which products you use for children.

What is dermatologically tested skin care?
This means that a dermatologist has tested the product and may also have been involved in the development of the product. Dermatologists are used to looking at whether there is any reaction on the skin to any substance and can assess whether this would be the case. The dermatologist simply performs an evaluation and clinical control of the product.
